Lombok-Surf-Yoga-Eco Retreat!

Lombok, Indonesia

Sept 12-18th, 2015

Indonesia is a place close to my heart. I first travelled throughout Java and Bali when I was 16 years old. I returned  again when I was 18 years old, working for World Vision and travelled extensively through Java, Sulewesi and Bali. In 1998, I returned again, this time to complete my final year of my Science degree at Universtas Gadja Mada, Yogyakarta's prestigious University. It was during my Uni  studies at UGM, that I  surfed at the famous G-Land break in Central Java! Since that time, a very turbulent time in Indonesia's history, I've returned to Bali and Nusa Lembongan to indulge in surf, yoga and play. I studied the  Indonesian Language  for 8 years, from Junior High-school to 3rd year University level.

It was during 1998, a time when the then President Suharto was ousted from Political rule,  I visited Lombok, on a field study which involved climbing Mt Rinjani, one of  Indonesias Sacred Volcanos. I loved Lombok so much and was struck by it's raw beauty and charming people. I just can't wait to return!

I'm so excited to return and this time I want to give back to community groups who work everyday to create sustainable change. For my SURF_YOGA_ECO_RETREAT, I invite you to to take a journey with me... a journey that makes us better people as well as improves the world we are so in love with seeing.
I invite you to take an adventure and TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE, give back, and expand to your fullest potential as you inspire others towards positive change.

"The urge to merge, the longing to melt into love with the essence of life is one of a human being's strongest urges. It's unstoppable."
I can't really explain how  fantatsic Lorin and Camilles  approach to teaching and coaching meditation is, you have to experience it!  Early this year, I had the good fortune to be able to take a 5 day training with Dr Lorin Roche and his wife, Camille. It was truly awesome - a life changing experience. Lorin and Camille are a gift to the universe beyond compare. Their compassion and wisdom is so beautiful.   I got so much out of the training and learnt so many tools and techniques to both practice, teach and coach meditation. More details about the training can be found HERE

A weekend of instinctive meditation training may inspire you to get started on your dream, your vision, your quest. You will learn tools to both practice and teach meditation. You will learn from two great master teachers, who have a combined teaching experience of over 80 years!! "Yoga Fears Raised"

Someone bought my attention to a Letter to the Editor, published last Thursday in a local free press newspaper. I love that we live in a country where we have the freedom to express our thoughts and opinions, and I totally respect the author for airing their concerns, doubts and fears. It's so great that we can freely have public debate and are able to choose the beliefs and values by which we live our lives by. I'm grateful for people like Vic Trudeau, who give us 'food for thought' and an opportunity to question our own values, beliefs and habits of daily life. Im grateful that this published letter has sparked emotions, passions and debate amoungst my peers. Passion fuels love and action. I love that these strong words allow us to ask oursleves deeper questions and demand that we question the things and people around us and draws us deeper into oursleves. Yoga is based on this inquiry into Self.
Clear the lense, build up your eyesight and throw away your corrective
eyeglasses, is the message of yoga. And this same message can prove to be a threat  to religious empires and hierarchies. We know that yoga has evolved to offer techniques that can be applied to people of ALL races, nations, beliefs, churches, sects, creeds. Thanks for your thoughts, Vic

Here is the letter:

So here is my reply,  I've tried SO hard to keep it brief, factual, kind  and respectful. I've tried so hard not to be arrogant, aggressive or judgemental. I've tried pretty hard to practice Yoga in this piece:

With reference to Vic Trudeau’s letter published in The Kawana Weekly, Thursday Sept 11th ,as a qualified childrens yoga teacher, currently teaching yoga in schools, I wish to comment on the ‘issues’ presented in their letter.

Firstly, Yoga is a Science. It is a science of well-being, a science of youthfulness, a science of  integrating  the mind and body through movement and breath. It is a science of how to take a human being to their  ultimate potential.

Meditation is a naturally occurring resting state.  Meditation teachers or coaches may give people some tools or techniques to help them access that natural state, where you are wide awake inside, and yet the body is relaxed into a state more restful than sleep

A modern definition of Religion is: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices; a scrupulous conformity; conscientiousness; a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith. We all know what religion IS, we’ve all had experience of religion. We know all religions bind disparate people together, to a church and a common basic belief system which is mutually upheld and constitutes the religion. Hopefully they all have an up-to-date map to God.

Yoga, on the other hand, does not bind separate or individual groups together. Unlike religion, in its pure form, Yoga has no organized institutions. Yoga is concerned with direct experience and observations.

What religion you belong to has nothing to do with your ability to make use of the yogic systems, because yoga is a science. Science does not make any distinction as to what beliefs you hold. What you may believe in or not is purely a psychological process – it has got nothing to do with making use of a science.

The sciences of yoga and meditation do not impose any beliefs on anyone. You can worship a rock, a cow, your mother – you can worship whatever you feel like. Yoga is not a religion or a church. It requires no belief in a doctrine, no credo. It does not require anyone to adhere to a belief system.

Yoga is Hindu just the way gravity is Christian. Just because the law of gravity was discovered by Isaac Newton, who lived in a Christian culture, does it make gravity Christian? Yoga is a science. Anybody who is willing to make use of it can make use of it. It is ridiculous to even think that there could be a religious tone to yoga.

As I, myself am a scientist, I would be very interested in seeing the evidence and research to prove that yoga has caused participants to ‘lose touch with reality....become(ing) psychotic and requir(ing)  medical intervention”

Finally , I invite Vic to attend any of my childrens ( or Adult)  yoga sessions, speak to teachers or parents of students I’ve taught and to contact me via info@tashyoga.com . I would be happy to discuss any concerns Vic might have about children being exposed to an empowering tool such as yoga and meditation.

My First Online Class

I've been playing with the idea of offering you some FREE online classes, for some time now... what do you think??

Here's my first, uneditted attempt:

It's very raw! The acoustics in the room is pretty bad and I forgot a whole sequence on the left side, when I was distracted by some people wanting to come into the studio!
I've uploaded it anyway and am viewing it as an opportunity to learn and grow, evolve, change and become a better teacher!
Filmed at Sunshine Coast Power Yoga, where I teach regular Childrens and Adults classes.
I've filmed some more  classes and will be uploading soon.

Oh, and here's another little sequence I shot recently:

Kids Yoga Term 2

School has returned, for most of the state. I hope you've enjoyed great times with your children and family... it's so important to cherish the holiday + play times outside of school time! So often parents and care-givers try to give material things to  show their love... but what's really important is to just laugh and dance and sing together; to share adventures and the outdoors, to create and spend quality time together; to accept each other for who they are.
It's imporant , as grown ups who are having an influence over children ( which is most of us !!)  to understand that the greatest gift we can give to children is to be the best that we can be; to live wholeheartedly, to take healthy risks, to do our best, to make mistakes, to forgive, to make positive contributions to the world, to work hard, not steal, to be honest, to be REAL and authentic. The world wants to see you being REAL!! As a parent/care-giver it is not your role to protect your children, wrap them up in cotton wool... its not your job to make them perfect... Your job is to let them know that they are worthy of your love and affection - thats it!

The Buddina Kids Yoga Course starts next week tuesday 2th April 4-5 pm at Sunshine Coast Power Yoga

I'm starting back at many Sunshine Coast schools this week too. To run kids yoga courses for primary and high school students at your school, please contact me  via  info@tashyoga.com

Coping with the School Holiday "I'm Bored" sydrome

" Yes, Kids love technology, but they also love Legos, scented markers, handstands, books and mud puddles. It's all about Balance"

K.G. First Grade Teacher

These school holidays, how can we  create Balance in the lives of our children?

In a recent interaction with a certain 5 year old boy, it became apparent that he was eating constantly, because he was "Bored!" . The  child was also displaying attention seeking behaviours by yelling, punching, screaming; fighting and arguing with his brother; annoying the family dog and being dependent on electronic devices and Grown-Ups for constant entertainment and stimulation.
Later that same day, I took the two brothers to the beach with the dogs, as I lay in the shade listening to the waves and smelling the salty air, I pondered the solution to the "I'm Bored" syndrome. How can I teach kids to be comfortable with silence? How can they learn to be internally content without external entertainment? How can I encourage children to be engaged in a self-guided, unstructured exploration of LIFE and themselves, independent of ipads and DVD's?

It was then that I noticed the two boys independently engaged in creative play and exploration... silently, individually playing with sand, pumice, sticks and inner-journeying through imaginative games.  They were quiet, happy, discovering new worlds and natural treasures; they were deep in exploration of the natural and sensual  world . They were  deploying their senses; they were meditating.
I'm noticing that often parents and carers are  responding to their kids' boredom by offering entertainment in the form of technology or structured activities ( "Lets go to the amusement park"). This can actually be counter productive. Children need to encounter and engage with the raw stuff that makes up life... they need to be able to be content with unstructured time.
If we constantly keep children stimulated with structured tasks and  screen entertainment, they begin to loose touch with the movements of their inner heart and become disconnected to their bodies. They start to eat when they're not hungry, for example.

When children say that they're bored it's often because:
- they're so used to screen time and are experiencing withdrawal-like symptoms
- their days are filled with structured time and they're not used to finding ways to have fun, in their own way/time.
- they've become dependent on parental attention;  They've developed a  neediness which their well-meaning parents have conditioned into them

Children learn through play. Children are happiest when they play. Play is children's work.

From my experience, even the most needy of children, if given the opportunity  and the time, will usually find some really interesting stuff to do.

Just like a  Family "Gratitude Jar", whereby members of the family  write down on strips of paper, things that they are grateful for.. you could have a Family "Boredom Jar".  Inside this Boredom Jar, you could collectively come up with some  activities to do when  your child is bored. When they say "I'm bored" they could pull out a  couple of the suggestions and give them a try in order  to alleviate the "Boredom".

The activities could be:

Create an obsatcle course in the back yard.
Make up a song
Make up a dance
Wash the car
Ride your bike
Do Yoga
Run around the back yard 5-10 times.
Do 30 seconds of star-jumps
Craft activities
Brush the dog
Read a book
Reorganise your bedroom
Create an adventure land in your bedroom
Build a cubby house in your backyard
Build a fortress of pillows and blankets
Start a collection of leaves/rocks/flowers
Weed the garden
Make up a story
Make up a board game
Throw the ball to the dog
Star Jumps, Pushups, Burpees.

Let me know your suggestions and ideas!!

Happy Holidays!!!

No Pain, All Gain

No one goes to yoga to experience pain and yet yoga teachers and practitioners often suffer from yoga-related discomfort, develop chronic pain or practise for years while tolerating “poses that hurt”. The good news is, it is not the poses that hurt us, but the way we do them.

Since Barbra began applying the alignment principles of Anusara Yoga to her teaching in 2005, she has witnessed countless examples of dramatic and often immediate improvement in many of the typical aches, pains and injuries that are common in the yoga world and the wider community.

In this class the “Universal Principles of Alignment” (UPA), a concise system of bio-mechanical principles, provide the basis for working therapeutically through the medium of asana. We will use physical yoga practice to deepen and integrate optimal posture and energy flow within the body.

Barbra will guide you to look closely at some of the asanas that practitioners most commonly find uncomfortable and teach you specific actions to transform those poses into ones which you can enjoy.
